European Investment Bank (EIB)
Description Go to funding source website
The European Investment Bank is the lending arm of the European Union. We are the biggest multilateral financial institution in the world and one of the largest providers of climate finance.
We help the economy, create jobs, promote equality and improve lives for EU citizens and for people in developing countries.
The EIB Group has two parts:
- The European Investment Bank and
- The European Investment Fund.
The EIF specialises in finance for small businesses and mid-caps.
We have more than 60 years' experience and expertise in project financing. Headquartered in Luxembourg, we have a network of local and regional offices in Europe and beyond.
The European Investment Bank focuses on six areas:
All the projects we finance must be bankable. But they also must comply with high technical, environmental and social standards.
The combined expertise of our economists, engineers, financial analysts and climate specialists ensures the success of our projects. In turn, the stamp of approval from our specialists triggers more investment from the private sector.
We lend to the public and private sectors. We support small companies through local banks and lend money to innovative start-ups. Mid-cap companies can receive direct support for research and development investments.
We do not lend more than half of the cost of a project, because we want our loans to crowd in financing from private investors and other public financial institutions.
The Bank offers a wide range of financial products at favourable terms. For certain projects that support innovation and skills in Europe, we accept more risk than a commercial bank. We also offer technical assistance to help prepare and implement projects.

"The EIB is a very good deal for the EU. We put money to work. Not taxpayer money – but money we raise from investors on the capital markets." (EIB President Werner Hoyer, January 2019)
The EIB is financially autonomous. We raise money by issuing bonds on international capital markets. Our excellent credit rating means we raise money at good rates. We pass on these benefits to our clients.
We are one of the greenest multilateral banks on the global markets. Our bankers invented the green bond market.
Responding to today’s challenges
The rapid spread of COVID-19 poses one of the European Union’s biggest socio-economic challenges since the end of the Second World War.
As an immediate response to this unprecedented crisis, the EIB Group, including the European Investment Fund, is establishing of a European Guarantee Fund of €25 billion that will support up to €200 billion of finance for companies, with a special focus on SMEs. This is on top of the emergency measures already in place to address the impacts of the coronavirus and support SMEs and the health sector.
But our response to today’s priorities goes beyond the EU borders. Poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, climate change—the world faces enormous challenges. Through our development impact, we help countries worldwide with innovative solutions to promote sustainable growth, reduce poverty and inequality, and improve lives.
