Description

Breakthrough Energy Catalyst

Accelerating the Deployment of Clean Technologies

Breakthrough Energy Catalyst (BEC) is a first-of-its-kind funding program that brings together organizations from across the private sector to accelerate the deployment of critical climate technologies by funding early commercial-scale projects.

To get to zero by 2050, we need to bring promising climate technologies to scale as fast as we can. We’re working to close funding gaps and create markets for low-carbon products by reducing their Green Premiums.

What We Do

Breakthrough Energy Catalyst is a novel platform that funds and invests in project companies utilizing emerging climate technologies that reduce emissions. By investing in these opportunities, Catalyst seeks to accelerate the adoption of these technologies worldwide and reduce their Green Premiums.

Our Approach

Catalyst both funds large demonstration projects and invests in first-of-a-kind commercial-scale projects that use key emerging climate technologies. To date, Catalyst has raised over $1 billion of direct capital to deploy in project funding opportunities. In addition to capital, Catalyst leverages the team’s energy-infrastructure-investing and project-development expertise to work with innovators on advancing their projects from the development stage to funding and ultimately, to construction.

Catalyst focuses on projects where we believe, with the right capital solutions and expertise, cleaner alternatives can displace carbon-intensive technologies. These could include:

  • Clean Hydrogen to decarbonize industry and transportation
  • Long Duration Energy Storage to provide cleaner and more reliable power in addition to heat
  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel to power aviation
  • Direct Air Capture to remove CO2 from the atmosphere
  • Manufacturing to decarbonize cement, steel, plastics, textiles, and fertilizers

Our Partners

Catalyst is building a global ecosystem of public- and private-sector partners dedicated to scaling the energy innovations the planet needs to thrive. We combine governments’ climate resources with private sector expertise in commercializing products, and we welcome partnerships with companies interested in delivering clean, affordable, reliable energy to all.

Our Partners – Direct Capital

Government Partners – Aligned Capital

Catalyst began operationalizing its €840 million partnership with the European Investment Bank and the European Commission. We also previously announced a similar partnership with the United Kingdom to be made operational and are closely collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy.
